"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmond Burke...
In this 2nd book of the Wings of Steele series, the adventure continues in Flight of Freedom - with one major difference Jack Steele's Freedom is no longer the wounded duck she once was. They leave UFW Blackmount Station repaired and retooled, with a complete crew, fully armed and resupplied, ready to hunt.
But life in a busy and turbulent universe is rarely as simple as one would hope it to be. This becomes painfully evident with the complexities in space as events splinter even the best laid plans at home and abroad.
Organized and motivated, the pirates are not to be taken lightly with a growing fleet of freelancers attracted by wealth and fame. In her own right, the Freedom was a name becoming famous... or infamous as far as the pirates were concerned. And that could spell disaster for the Freedom and her crew...
An epic science fiction adventure that reaches from the surface of our familiar planet and the safety of terra firma, to the dark, vast expanse of deep space and distant empires.
Wings of Steele Flight of Freedom Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Jeffrey Burger Kevin Clay Books
Outstanding sequel, and much better than the first. The first book was a bit frantic and rushed in places. This book has none of that. Terrific action packed space opera story telling. Nothing but praise for this story. Action, adventure, suspense, cliff hanger drama, action and more action. I cant wait to read more and see some people get the justice they deserve, and that is a problem. A year between books is too long to wait. Surely you can live of the wife's income and write full time, this is your calling....Buy these books, they're worth every penny.

Wings of Steele Flight of Freedom Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Jeffrey Burger Kevin Clay Books Reviews
Basically a well-written space opera, even if it does sometimes bear a resemblance to World War II aircraft carrier operations stories, with sexual kinks and a Warrior Princess Dianna complex thrown in for current reader interest. Its view of US government seems grounded in a desire to portray the security services of the country as a bunch of tyrannical domestic terrorists in dark suits and black vans. There are also a few loose ends in the plot. The sequence written around the wraith is never fully developed or integrated into the plot, seemingly stuffed into the story line as filler. And it is never clear why Maria goes off the rails and needs therapy.
Apart from that, Wings of Steel is good for a few evenings occupation. Perhaps in time, the author will develop a more nuanced and integrated voice.
Jeffrey Burger's second offering eclipses his first in so many dimensions. Readers, don't expect a a Heinlein classic here, however the tale is ridiculously addictive and once you go down this path there is no coming back.
The dialogue is smoother (mostly), there are far fewer grammatical and punctuation errors and my brain came out less tortured than it was with Book 1 (which if you read my review you would find I greatly enjoyed, regardless).
Did you ever read Captain W.E. Johns "Biggles", Jeffrey?
By the way Jeffrey, ADD and ADHD are not OCD, best you read up on your psych literature, that particular episode had me staring dumbfounded at my for ten minutes, I swear.
All that said, I could not put the book down and am keenly awaiting the third, fourth and fifth instalments.
As far as military protocol is concerned, the organizational imperative seems more like that of a USAF fighter squadron, where the commander is a Lt Col and most of the pilots are Captains everyone likes the old man but everyone equally is pretty off-handed and given to banter. Steele is not big on ceremony, everyone knows it, and everyone pushes the envelope as much as they think they can get away with. This normally would be a hard sell when the commander is a fleet carrier captain, with a far larger crew, but, oddly enough, it works. This is space opera, to be sure, but there is a fair amount of good-natured humor. As with all space opera, there are assorted instances of our hero doing things that no one as senior as he is would likely ever do, vast amounts of luck, the occasional 'deus ex machina' at appropriate moments, and the appearance of the obligatory royal, plus the mysterious and supportive Superior Being. Vol. 1 was equally fun, and I'm sure the bad guys will continue to get theirs in creative ways in Vol. 3. I especially look forward to Steele's return to Earth in his new and expanded role with the Directorate Fleet. (This is not a spoiler, for two reasons 1) this is space opera and 2) there is a Vol. 3. Plus, I didn't mention details.)
Story goes full bore after battle that destroys Freedom. Jack and crew receive promotions and new ships, explore the GOD drive, leave the rebuilding of Velora Prime and continue to search for Pirate activity and parts. Back on Earth Chase flees with Karen to find friend Dan and a refuge from the NSA. Jack's parents have disappeared. Lisa, Jack's sister gets military and pilots training. Unexpected find when going undercover parts hunting at neutral space station with Syndicate & pirate presence. More engaging full blown space opera than stereotypes this book. Will keep you reading late.
Flight of Freedom follows directly from Destination Unknown and dives straight into new adventures. The action is as plentiful and as good as the previous book and so are the characters.
The first part of the book appears to make a detour into a bit of a side-adventure which at first felt a bit plopped in just to expand the book but after having read the book in its entirety I have the impression that this episode will possibly tie into the overall story arc at a later point more than I first expected. The main parts of the book however deals with Jack, Alité and the UFW force investigating what has happened on Alité’s home planet, which has fallen off the grid. At this point we are indeed wondering into space opera land and a fair amount nefarious scheming involving pirates and corrupted companies are made, or at least hinted at, which I am sure will be the longer term foundation for future books in this series.
The characters are as enjoyable to read about as in the previous book. A few new ones are introduced of which I really liked Boney and his rather efficient way of dealing with some of the more despicable characters encountered.
One problem, from my point of view at least, of these unknowing-humans-discover-we’re-not-alone kind of stories is that when the first book is done and the story progresses that wow-moment and element of surprise that I really like is gone. Not so with these books. Since the majority of mankind is unaware of Jack’s adventures and quite a few of his relatives and friends are left on Earth the author manages to weave in a few more of these moments in the story with regular intervals. The fact that the government’s “Men in Black” mobsters are running around as clumsily and clueless as usual is of course increasing the probability of some violent action as well.
As a whole, this is another great space adventure book. I am quite looking forward to the next one.
